Lewis O'Brien delivers Leeds United transfer verdict after Huddersfield Town decision

Leeds United summer transfer target Lewis O’Brien has reportedly agreed terms on a new deal with Huddersfield Town.

Leeds made O’Brien their top midfield target during the summer transfer window following their failed pursuit of Conor Gallagher, who opted to make the move to Crystal Palace on loan from Chelsea instead.

Huddersfield chairman Phil Hodgkinson confirmed following the close of the window that the Whites submitted four separate offers for O’Brien, with the final one totalling a fee of around £13m.

However, due to the structure of the deal, Hodgkinson rejected each of Leeds’ advances and instead, the 22-year-old remained at the John Smith’s Stadium.

After resisting their West Yorkshire rival's interest, Town have now moved quickly to negotiate an agreement to extend the academy graduate’s stay with the club, whose current deal was set to expire at the end of the season.

Football Insider have reported that O’Brien has agreed the terms of a new three-year deal, a decision which would represent a huge boost for Town, who have started the Championship season in impressive form.

O’Brien has scored one goal and provided one assist in six matches this campaign, with Carlos Corberan’s side sitting only outside of the play-offs on goal difference.

Since making his breakthrough into the first team following an excellent loan spell at near neighbours Bradford City, O’Brien has made 89 appearances for the club.

In his first full season he won the club’s player of the year award, and he is expected to play a crucial role at Town this season if they are to sustain their positive start to the campaign.
