Lewis Mayo leaves Rangers on loan transfer as he joins Kilmarnock and looks forward to 'big season'

Rangers youngster Lewis Mayo will be playing Premiership football next season after joining newly promoted Kilmarnock for the campaign.

The Light Blues defender put pen to paper on a contract extension with the club until 2024 before hooking up with Derek McInnes' men for the upcoming season. The stopper was at Partick Thistle last season in the Scottish Championship but he will make the step up by playing in Scotland's top flight next term.

A short Rangers statement on Twitter read: #RangersFC are today delighted to announce a contract extension for @ScotlandNT Youth International Lewis Mayo. "Mayo's new deal runs to the summer of 2024, and he will immediately join @KilmarnockFC on-loan until the end of this season."

On joining the Rugby Park side, the young defender told the official club website: “I’m delighted to join Kilmarnock. It’s a really exciting opportunity and I’m looking forward to big season for both me and Killie.”

Boss Derek McInnes added: “Lewis started really well in his loan spell with Patrick last season and showed signs that he’s clearing improving.

"We look forward to working closely with him to develop him and I’m sure he’ll help us in the challenges ahead.”

Kilmarnock return to competitive action on July 9 as they begin their Premier Sports Cup group stage campaign.

They face Fraserburgh in the opener before games with Partick Thistle, Montrose and Stenhousemuir.

The big Premiership return is at the end of July with Dundee United making the trip to Rugby Park.
