Lewis Holtby and the Rangers link as midfielder prepares to leave Hamburg

Lewis Holtby has been linked with a move to Rangers as the former the Tottenham star gets set to leave Hamburg.

The 28-year-old is a free agent and reports in Germany state the Ibrox side are keen on the midfielder.

The all-action star will leave the Bundesliga 2 side when his contract expires in the summer and a host of teams will be monitoring his situation closely.

Steven Gerrard spoke openly last week about his need to find better players and Holtby would certainly fit the bill.

Rangers have a host of central midfielders on their books but the three-times capped HSV star would add a different level of quality at Ibrox.

Lassana Coulibably, who plays a deeper role, has scarcely featured since the turn of the year and is expected to return to parent club Angers when his one-year loan expires.

Holby has experience of British football having spent two seasons with Spurs, which included a spell with Fulham on loan.

He will no doubt have heard all about Rangers having been team-mates with David Bates, who moved to Germany last summer.

Holtby has netted five goals in 27 appearances in all competitions this season.
