Lewis Hamilton says the bespoke Apple camera technology developed for F1: The Movie delivered footage far superior to what is currently being used for Formula 1 broadcast coverage, adding that he expects the championship to eventually adopt it. This came ahead of the news that Apple won F1 US broadcast rights from 2026 on a five-year deal.
Speaking at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation post-screening panel, the seven-time world champion - and producer of the F1 movie - celebrated Apple's development of the cameras used for filming, which allowed the filmmakers to capture footage from several perspectives around the car.
“What you’re seeing is an incredible evolution of technology with Apple and those new cameras that they designed to capture different angles,” the Ferrari driver said. “The footage we have from the cars are better than what you see when you watch Formula 1. I’m sure at some point, Formula 1 is going to see how we can get those cameras on our cars. But they’re pretty heavy, all the gear.”
While adoption of this technology relies on the weight, packaging, and potential trade-offs for teams and their drivers, both Apple and F1 have already teased a number of new technologies as they look forward to their partnership.
“That Apple put their faith in us to actually shoot a movie this way is pretty amazing. Luckily, we pulled it off,” director Joseph Kosinski said with the movie hitting $629million at the global box office.

Apple's senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue, talking after the deal was confirmed, said, “We’ve had, over the course of making the movie, from the teams, the drivers, the fans, this cutting-edge technology, the innovation, everything about it, we think is a perfect marriage of Apple TV and Formula 1 being the exclusive provider.”
He added: “As you know, we brought some new technology to F1 for the movie. And as I look over the next five years, it’s going to be very, very exciting to innovate and come up with new things and and we can try things. It’s very easy when you control all sides of it.”
Ian Holmes, F1's chief media rights and broadcasting officer, added that further technology is also under consideration, including virtual reality.
“We’ve already spent time, as Eddy said during the filming of the movie, looking at new camera technologies, which ultimately help us create a better product. Clearly, there’s certain AR and VR opportunities that we can explore.”
