Lewis Hamilton the wealthiest sports star in Great Britain after topping 2020 Sunday Times Rich List

Lewis Hamilton is the richest sports star in Great Britain, according to The Sunday Times Rich List.

35-year-old Hamilton won his sixth Formula 1 championship last November, becoming the second most successful driver in the history of the sport, one behind the legendary Michael Schumacher.

And with that success on the track comes success off it with the Stevenage-born driver now worth £224m, up £37m in the past year thanks to a driving contract with Mercedes worth up to £40m annually with bonuses.

Golfer Rory McIlroy (£170m) is the only other sportsman on the list but sports stars dominant the Young Rich List of those 30 or under, claiming 18 of those 50 places.

Gareth Bale (£114m) leads a list dominated by footballers but heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua comes in at second, now estimated to be worth £107m after a £58m rise in his wealth.

Joshua lost his IBF, WBO and WBA (Super) titles in a shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr in Madison Square Garden last June, a fight he is said to have earned £18m from.

But the 2012 Olympian reclaimed his belts with a punch perfect display in Saudi Arabia in December as he earned an estimated £60m from the fight before tax and deductions.

Joshua's £58m rise is the biggest in sport.
