Lewis Hamilton spotted taking close look at Max Verstappen's Red Bull ahead of F1 testing

Lewis Hamilton was snapped having a cheeky inspection of the new Red Bull car before testing got under way on Thursday morning.

Formula 1 teams are running their new cars in from of the TV cameras for the first time this week in Bahrain. But they only have three days of pre-season testing before the competitive action gets under way with a race on this same track on the first weekend of March.

Fans were waiting for the start of testing for their fix of seeing F1 cars on track. Other than that, one of the other main reasons why these sessions were much anticipated was to get a proper look at the Red Bull RB19.

That's because, while many teams showed a car which was at least reminiscent of their actual design when pulling the covers off their liveries, Red Bull were more guarded. Their 2023 livery was shown off on a show car at their New York launch event earlier this month.

Clearly, they were keen to not give away too many secrets about their new car. A true reflection of the RB19's design was was seen on track for the first time on Friday as Max Verstappen took to the Bahrain track to get some practice under his belt.

Not that Hamilton and his old Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas were willing to wait that long. They were both snapped having a very close look inside the cockpit of the Red Bull machine while it was parked up on track.

Hamilton will have made sure to avoid making actual contact with the car. Verstappen made that particularly expensive mistake in Brazil in 2021, when he touched the rear wing of Hamilton's Mercedes and was later fined £44,000 for doing so.

Teasing the Red Bull car, Christian Horner had promised it would look "quite different" that it did for the launch. He said: "I think the car that we've shown will be somewhat different when you see it in Bahrain. This was really about launching the team's aspirations for the year ahead, the partners that we have and of course the exciting partnership we have with Ford.

"To do it here in the US, in this market, is the first time ever for Red Bull Racing. So yes, what you've seen obviously isn't a total reflection of what will hit the track in Bahrain in a couple of weeks time."
