Lewis Hamilton spotted spying on Ferrari F1 car as Mercedes "trust" comment made

Lewis Hamilton spent some time taking a very close look at Carlos Sainz's car in parc ferme after an underwhelming Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying session for Mercedes.

The Silver Arrows will have come into the weekend with a renewed sense of optimism after their performance last time out in Australia. A poor start to the season was forgotten when George Russell and Hamilton qualified second and third, and showed good pace in the Melbourne race too.

But a repeat in Baku was not on the cards. Russell failed to reach Q3 and will start Sunday's race 11th on the grid, while Hamilton managed to scrape through by the skin of his teeth before going fifth fastest.

After clambering out of his Mercedes, he would usually head straight for the media pen before returning to the garage for a debrief. But TV cameras caught him stopping to take a close and long look at the Ferrari in parc ferme.

Moments after it was broadcast on Sky Sports, pundit Naomi Schiff asserted that the seven-time world champion is currently "unable to trust" his Mercedes machine. She added: "You could see Lewis and George, they were really fighting the car."

Hamilton later said himself that the W14 is proving very tricky to drive. He said: "We're trying as hard as we can. We've given it absolutely everything out there and it's just timing and getting into the rhythm and really pulling out everything is not easy on this track.

"Everyone's working as hard as they can so we haven't had an upgrade this weekend, but we are working towards one that will hopefully put us a little closer to the battle ahead. The car is not the easiest one to drive but I'm happy to be on the third row hopefully tomorrow we can have a better battle."

Meanwhile Russell, who really struggled in qualifying, said: "Well, we are just not fast enough this weekend. Obviously I would love to be in Q3 but I was giving it everything. I think right now we wouldn't really know what to change to find the pace we need around this track.

"We will see what we can do tomorrow, I will try hard to try and improve my driving and try to work with the team to see what we can do to come back stronger."
