In a surprising turn of events, Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton has announced his departure from the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team. The team revealed in a statement on February 1st that Hamilton has activated a release option in his contract, making the current season his last with the Silver Arrows. This decision marks the end of an incredible 11-year journey for Hamilton with Mercedes.

Hamilton, 39, made his debut in Formula 1 with McLaren in 2007 before joining Mercedes in 2013. Reflecting on his time with the team, Hamilton expressed immense pride in their achievements together. He described Mercedes as a place where he has grown up, making the decision to leave a tough one. However, he believes the time is right for him to embrace a new challenge.

With deep gratitude, Hamilton acknowledged the unwavering support he has received from the Mercedes family throughout his career. He intends to make his final year with the team a memorable one, leaving behind a legacy that will be hard to match.

Shortly after the news broke, Ferrari swiftly announced that Hamilton will join their team in 2025, signing a 'multiyear' contract. This move will see Hamilton replacing Carlos Sainz and joining forces with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, who recently extended his contract with the team. Ferrari revealed that the 2024 season will be Sainz's last with them.

The decision of Hamilton to part ways with Mercedes has caught many Formula 1 fans off guard. In previous interviews, the British racer expressed his intention to remain with the German car manufacturer for the remainder of his career. He emphasized his desire to not only continue racing but also actively contribute to Mercedes beyond the track, highlighting their potential beyond being solely a car manufacturer.

Since his debut in 2007, Lewis Hamilton has amassed a multitude of accolades in Formula 1. With an impressive seven World Drivers' Championship titles to his name, he currently holds the records for the most wins, pole positions, and podium finishes. His departure from Mercedes will undoubtedly leave a significant void within the team and add an intriguing dynamic to the sport.

As the 2024 season unfolds, all eyes will be on Hamilton as he aims to make the most of his final year with Mercedes, while simultaneously preparing for the next chapter of his career with Ferrari. Formula 1 fans can expect an electrifying season ahead, filled with anticipation and excitement as the world bids farewell to a true legend in his Silver Arrow.
