Lewis Hamilton sets new record as he roars to 90th Formula One career pole

Lewis Hamilton has set a new track record to qualify on pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The six-time world champion produced a red-hot lap to beat his Mercedes team-mate and rival Valtteri Bottas by just over one-tenth of a second in the fastest-ever time at the Hungaroring.

It was pole number 90 for Hamilton, who reached a milestone that even the greatest F1 drivers in history never came close to matching.

Michael Schumacher trails the Brit on 68 pole positions and Ayrton Senna is third with 65 poles.

Hamilton’s mighty Mercedes team filled the front row for the third time in as many grand prix since the reorganised season began in Austria.

Hamilton said after qualifying: “It’s crazy. I have to pinch myself. It’s quite humbling.

“I get to work with an incredible group of people and the guys do something an amazing job. Valtteri [Bottas] doesn't make it easy for me but doing laps like that is what I enjoy most.

“It’s a long run down to Turn One, so nothing is a given. I’ve got to deliver at the start tomorrow, and we don’t know what the weather will do, but I’ll be trying as hard as I can to bring a one-two home for the team tomorrow.”

Lance Stroll qualified in third ahead of his Racing Point colleague Sergio Perez, with Ferrari duo Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc fifth and sixth and Red Bull’s Max Verstapen only seventh.

Meanwhile Hamilton will have the chance to equal another record in the race on Sunday.

The 35-year-old will be gunning for his eighth Hungarian Grand Prix, which would bring him level with Schumacher who has won the most F1 races at a single circuit at the French Grand Prix.

Boasting 85 race victories to Schumacher’s 91 wins, he is currently six behind the great German driver in the all-time standings.
