Lewis Hamilton Regrets Passing On Top Gun Sequel Opportunity

Lewis Hamilton British race car driver

Racing superstar Lewis Hamilton recently shared a story about a missed opportunity to work with actor Tom Cruise, a decision he still regrets to this day. Hamilton revealed in a GQ magazine interview that he had befriended Cruise after being invited to the set of the 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow. The two stayed in touch, with Cruise even sending Hamilton encouraging messages during his races. At one point, Hamilton expressed interest in being part of a potential Top Gun sequel, offering to play any role, even that of a janitor.

When the sequel began pre-production, Cruise remembered Hamilton's request and connected him with director Joseph Kosinski, who offered the F1 driver a role as one of the film's pilots. However, due to his busy schedule and lack of acting experience, Hamilton ultimately declined the opportunity. He later regretted his decision after seeing the 2022 film, feeling that he could have been a part of it.

Although the Top Gun sequel didn't mark Hamilton's entry into Hollywood, another chance to collaborate with Kosinski arose. Hamilton signed on to produce the director's upcoming Formula 1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, aiming to ensure an authentic portrayal of the international racing league. He emphasized the importance of authenticity in the film to cater to both long-time fans and newcomers to the sport.
