F1 star Lewis Hamilton has been outspoken over the past two weeks about the killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter marches across the US and the world.
First, Hamilton called out his FI colleagues over their lack response on social injustice, saying “I see those of you who are staying silent, some of you the biggest of stars yet you stay silent in the midst of injustice. Not a sign from anybody in my industry which of course is a white-dominated sports.”
Hamilton has also been keeping an eye on what’s happening in the UK, and commented on protesters in Bristol toppling a statue of noted British slave trader Edward Colston.
“I challenge government officials worldwide to make these changes and implement the peaceful removal of these racist symbols,” he wrote on Instagram.
Hamilton also used this considerable platform, he has 16.5 million Instagram followers, to slam the British government for their handling of Covid-19 and talk more about Colston’s statue.
“That mans [sic] statue should stay in the river just like the 20 thousand African souls who died on the journey here and thrown into the sea, with no burial or memorial. He stole them from their families, country and he must not be celebrated!”
