Lewis Hamilton "incredibly proud" of F1 rival Sebastian Vettel and hints at future partnership

Lewis Hamilton is very “proud” of his relationship with fellow racer Sebastien Vettel.

The defending F1 world champion is pleased with the German for his efforts to campaign for social and environmental change.

The Aston Martin driver has been vocal in his support for the LGBTQ+ community and also visited a school to discuss climate change.

The German driver also sports a design on his helmet which encourages sustainable water sourcing and was seen litter picking at Silverstone.

Speaking on Vettel's efforts, as reported by Autosport, Hamilton said: "I’ve been incredibly proud of Sebastian for doing him.

"He has discovered things that he is passionate about and he is speaking about them, he’s not shying away from it.

"I think also, with the older generation, I guess when we get to our age we have a little bit more empathy.”

Hamilton added: "He’s got a family, he’s speaking about the future of his kids and the planet, what we do now to prepare them for the future.

"And he’s obviously trying to be a beacon of light for those kids and for other kids that support him."

Hamilton even hinted the pair, who have a whopping 11 F1 titles between them, could work together in the future in a bid to make consistent social and environmental change.

"We speak often and we talk on these topics so I don’t know”, he added.

"We don’t have any plans of doing anything in the future but we, as I said, if there is a specific issue on a weekend, we discuss it and we support each other with it."

Hamilton has been at the focal point of the Black Lives Matter Movement both at races and on social media.

He often wears t-shirts promoting racial equality and takes the knee before each Grand Prix.

Earlier this month, Hamilton launched a partnership to boost the recruitment of black teachers in science, technology and maths (STEM) subjects.

The initiative follows the findings from the Hamilton Commission Report , which the seven-time F1 world champion compiled to address the lack of diversity in UK motorsport.

The new two-year programme, set-up by Hamilton's Mission 44 scheme, will run in partnership with education charity Teach First, and is designed to explore different methods to identify the best practices when recruiting black STEM teachers.
