Lewis Hamilton dedicates Monaco GP victory to Niki Lauda

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was victorious at the Monaco Grand Prix - and marked the win with a fitting tribute to the former Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda following his death.

Hamilton, 34, sported a one-off red helmet in tribute to the third-time F1 champion, while his team wore red caps as a mark of respect.

A one-minute silence was also staged on the grid.

Hamilton claimed a nail-biting victory after a tense race which saw him survive a collision with racer Max Verstappen, who finished up in fourth place despite crossing the line second.

Hamilton said: "That was the hardest race I have had.

"I was fighting with the spirit of Niki. He has been an influential person in the team. I know he was looking down.

"I wanted to stay focused and make him proud. We truly miss him."

Niki Lauda died 'peacefully' on May 20 surrounded by his family.

The Austrian race car driver took the Ferrari titles in 1975 and 1977, and won his third title for McLauren in 1984.

Although a three-time champion, he is widely remembered for his miraculous recovery and return to the profession after suffering severe burns in a horror crash at the 1976 German Grand Prix.

Hamilton afterwards told fans: "I have not driven on such empty tyres since Shanghai in 2007. I hope it wasn’t really boring. I was never going to come in.

"I learned the hard way here before. I was driving on nothing. This team has done an incredible job.

"What we have achieved in the first six races is remarkable."
