Lewis Gibson leaves Everton on loan following Championship and Eredivisie interest

Lewis Gibson has joined Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan.

The 21-year-old defender is not expected to feature for the League One club in their game with Charlton Athletic today but, instead, be in contention to face Doncaster in a week.

Gibson had offers from eight clubs this summer, including in the Championship and in Holland’s Eredivisie, but felt joining up with Darren Moore’s side was the right move at this stage of his career.

Gibson spent half a season on loan at Fleetwood Town in early 2020 and was one of the division’s stand-out defenders during that spell.

A loan move to Championship side Reading was then arranged but Gibson was largely overlooked as the Royals opted for experience at the back.

And so the 2017 signing from Newcastle United, who has impressed Rafa Benitez and his coaching staff this summer, knew he needed guaranteed games to aid his development and with Sheffield Wednesday reviving the interest they showed in the January window, the young defender accepted their offer.

Everton have the option of extending Gibson’s contract, which runs out next summer, and remain committed to his progression, with the hope this loan proves a springboard for his Blues career.
