Lewis Capaldi stuns Liverpool crowd with Atomic Kitten sing-a-long - review

"We're all here tonight to cry about people who don't care about us."

That's what Lewis Capaldi said to a sell-out crowd at the M&S Bank Arena last night. Lewis was certainly true to his word, captivating fans with a show full of emotional hits, but this was interspersed with the Scottish pop sensation's unique sense of humour as he cracked jokes that could rival many comedians, receiving roars of laughter from fans.

The show started with an incredible set from support act Raye, who set the tone perfectly. Raye's soulful vocals proved to be popular with the Liverpool crowd as she performed songs including her sensational number one track, Escapism.

Lewis and his band then entered the stage, all donning matching white outfits as he kicked off the night with performances of Forget Me and Forever. After welcoming the crowd, Lewis paid homage to the city's rich music history, declaring that some of his favourite musicians come from Liverpool.

This led to an impromptu Atomic Kitten sing-a-long, as he got the crowd singing Whole Again and The Tide Is High with him. Lewis then turned to the crowd and said: "I love the Beatles, but I might just love Atomic Kitten more."

Midway through singing Bruises, Lewis stopped the track after noticing a steward crying to the song. He said: "I don't know what you've gone through in your life that made you cry to this song, but I'm glad you're healing", before picking up where he left off.

A real highlight of the show was the level of engagement with the crowd. Few people could go from singing songs made up of emotional lyrics about the pain of heartbreak to making everyone laugh minutes later, but Lewis does it perfectly.

In a particularly lovely moment, Lewis got the crowd to sing Happy Birthday to a member of his crew and a 22-year-old fan, who was in one of the boxes. An image of the fan appeared on screen as a birthday cake was brought out on stage. Lewis also paused to take a BeReal on stage, which he later posted on his Twitter account.

Before singing Pointless, Lewis thanked the crowd for getting the track to number one. He was required to stop mid-track due to a fan fainting, ensuring they got help as quickly as possible. Before starting again, fans threw some underwear onto the stage. Lewis had the audience in stitches as he sported a pair of red knickers, before throwing them back out into the crowd.

In addition to delivering stellar performances of hits including Before You Go and Hold Me While You Wait, Lewis also treated the crowd to four new tracks from his second album 'Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent', which is set to be released in May. Despite apologising for having songs people didn't know yet on the setlist, each track got a strong reception from the adoring crowd and gave us a taste of an album that promises to showcase Lewis at his very best. Before singing one new track, How I'm Feeling Now, Lewis thanked fans for making the past five years of his life the best, as well as opening up about his struggles with anxiety.

The show ended with Someone You Loved, which Lewis got the crowd to sing back to him. You could see what the adoration from fans meant to Lewis as the whole arena sang the track at the top of their lungs.

Lewis' voice was undeniably brilliant, he didn't miss a note all night and delivered powerful vocals from start to finish. It felt like nobody wanted the night to end as fans cheered loudly before he reluctantly said goodbye.

Lewis expressed how much the night meant to him, but it was clear to see how much it meant to the crowd too. If you haven't seen Lewis Capaldi live before, then I definitely recommend it.
