Lewis Capaldi says he feels under pressure to be funny for public approval

Lewis Capaldi has admitted he feels under pressure to be funny after his sense of humour endeared him to the public.

The Someone You Loved singer revealed he feels like a stand-up comic because fans want him to tell jokes at gigs.

The 23-year-old said people seemed to like his down to earth personality as much as his songs.

Capaldi, from
Whitburn, West Lothian, added: “The singing is fine but the speaking in between the songs is when I’m most nervous.

“I can’t handle this
pressure, it’s so intense.

“Even if people have come to see a gig, to see me play music, if I don’t tell a couple of jokes on stage people get like really upset with me.”

“They are like ‘Oh man, I went to see Lewis Capaldi tonight and he wasn’t even that funny’. I’m like ‘I’m a singer, that’s my job’.”

“It’s like they only came for the bits in between the songs.”

Speaking to Ohio-based radio station Kiss FM, the Someone You Loved singer added: “Oh man, it’s stressful. What I do now is I just say the same stuff every night as if I was a stand-up comedian but obviously not as good or funny.”

Capaldi still lives at home with mum Carol, a nurse, and dad Mark, a fishmonger, and has been spending lockdown working on his second album.

After self-releasing his first track Bruises in 2017, he became the fastest ever unsigned artist to pass the 25million plays mark on Spotify.

He was then snapped up by music giants Capitol in the United States and the Virgin label in the UK.

His debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent has sold more than one million copies.

Last month accounts published for the two companies which handle his income showed they have £2 million in the bank.
