Lewis Capaldi has offered to step up to the plate and lead Britain through the Brexit crisis after Theresa May's resignation announcement.

In a hilarious video from Germany, the singer-songwriter proudly suggested that he could take over as Prime Minister.

May revealed on Friday morning that she will resign as PM on June 7.

The news now triggers a leadership race to see who takes over as head of the party and as Prime Minister.

Speaking with German TV host Jo Schück ahead of his appearance on local show 'Aspekte', the Whitburn lad enjoyed a joke at May's expense.

Speaking to his 2.1million Instagram followers, the 22-year-old said: "Hello, it's me, Lewis Capaldi here with Jo, and tonight I'm going to be on Aspekte, and basically I'm going to be speaking some German - Jo is going to be teaching me some stuff."

Jo responded: "It's just two days before the European elections results, right?

"And the interesting thing is Theresa May, your number one, is stepping back.

"And who got new number one in the UK...?"

To which Capaldi bluntly responded: "Me. I will do it. I will be the new Prime Minister."

And Jo joked: "It can't be a coincidence!"
