Lewis Capaldi named dogs’ favourite singer following heart rate research

Lewis Capaldi has been named the music artist most loved by dogs, according to new heart rate research.

The Scottish crooner's songs were found most likely to relax pooches and send them to sleep.

Behavioural experts at Dog Friendly Retreats hooked up 30 canines to monitors to in a bid to see what music made their heart rates drop.

Lewis, whose debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent is on course to be the biggest UK seller for a second year, beat the likes of George Ezra and Bob Marley to the top spot.

On average, the dogs' heart rates dropped by 13% when they heard his music.

The study showed that music genres such as ‘indie’ made dogs the happiest, as heart rate readings and behavioural cues showed that it had the most calming effect on canines.

The experts determined that 'favourite' music resulted in the most relaxed reaction, for example if a dog’s heart rate dropped, they relaxed into a comfortable lying position or started to sleep.

Music that involves fast tempo riffs, loud instrumentals and high pitched vocals such as heavy metal agitated the dogs and caused them to pace or fidget.

Pop music evoked a more excitable response, causing the dogs to hang their tongue out of their mouth and pant or bark with a slightly elevated heart rate.

Josh Williams of Dog Friendly Retreats, said: “I can’t say I’m too surprised that Capaldi has topped the list.

"He’s got a great voice, and I can imagine the dogs adore those big notes as much as we do."
