Lewis Capaldi Launches Comeback After Two-Year Hiatus With Triumphant Single ‘Survive’

Lewis Capaldi has announced his return to music with a brand new single, two years after taking a hiatus while battling tourette’s syndrome.

ICYMI, the Scottish crooner and soundtrack to many of my cry sessions took a step back from the spotlight in 2023, after a bout of tourette’s syndrome caused him to have uncontrollable twitches during his set at Glastonbury music festival.

Shortly after the set — which went viral for the heartwarming moment the audience took over his performance of smash hit “Someone You Loved” — Capaldi told fans on social media that he was taking a break from music to focus on his mental and physical health.

“I used to be able to enjoy every second of shows like this”, Capaldi wrote after his Glastonbury set, “but the truth is I’m still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette’s”.

Now, Capaldi has made good on the triumphant return he promised, releasing a new single today that is fittingly-titled “Survive”.

“It’s been a while,” the singer wrote when sharing the track on social media, alongside clips of him both on and off the stage and old footage of his childhood self with a guitar.

Some lyrics in the track touch on Capaldi’s experience over the past two years, with mentions of his “fear that I’m not enough” and how he is “gonna get up and try, if it’s the last thing I’ll do”.

Seriously, there’s just something in my eye!

It’s every bit as tear-inducing as you’d expect from the creator of “Someone You Loved” (honestly, I’d only just stopped crying to that one), but for those already eager to hear more from Capaldi… you’ll have to wait (at least for now).

The singer has not yet revealed whether “Survive” will form part of a broader project, or whether its release signals that some kind of tour is on the horizon, so for now you’ll just have to chuck the track on repeat until we hear more news about Capaldi’s return.

In any case, fans are no-doubt hopeful that Capaldi will soon make his way Down Under, especially since he cancelled all of the dates of his sold-out Australian tour, as well as a set at Splendour in the Grass, following his hiatus announcement back in 2023.

In the more immediate future, some fans have taken Capaldi’s new single as a sign that he will make a surprise appearance at this year’s Glastonbury, which kicks off in the UK today and would be a full-circle moment that my tear ducts simply couldn’t take.

So Capaldi fans, watch (and cry in) this space.
