Lewis Capaldi celebrates Someone You Love selling three million copes then dedicates TRNSMT performance of song to teen who took his own life

Lewis Capaldi celebrated his single Someone You Love selling three million copies worldwide last week - then dedicated his latest performance of the hit to a young man who committed suicide.

The Whitburn singing sensation announced to his 700,000 Facebook followers on Friday that his single had reached the milestone figure, and that his album is now the best selling in the UK so far this year.

He wrote: “The album is back at number one! So mad that my album is the biggest selling by an artist in the UK so far this year, can’t thank everyone enough for this.

“Also, Someone You Loved has sold three million worldwide. Madness.”

Two days later, while appearing at the TRNSMT festival in Glasgow, Lewis sang Someone You Love in tribute to 18-year-old Robbie McArthur.

Robbie, from Lochgelly in Fife, took his own life in May this year, with the song played at his funeral.

His heartbroken family and pals launched an online bid to get Lewis to sing his chart-topper at the Glasgow Green festival.

Robbie’s mum Carmen Duff also wrote to the singer on Instagram, saying: “Hey Lewis, I’m hoping you would do me the honour of giving my son Robbie McArthur from Lochgelly a massive shout out at TRNSMT on Sunday before you sing Someone You Loved.

“I recently lost Robbie to suicide and your song was what I chose for his funeral.

“Every time I go into the cemetery to see him, you come on the radio.

“My telly also came on by itself one day and there you were belting this out with the lyrics on the screen.

“You would really lift myself and Robbie’s friends’ spirits.”

After Lewis’ performance, Carmen’s friends Bryan and Pamela Wilson thanked him and everyone who got behind their efforts on Facebook.

They wrote: “First time in nine long weeks I’ve heard my bestie as happy as that. You have made her day.”

Thousands of music fans attended Glasgow Green on Sunday for the third day of the TRNSMT music fest, and the crowds erupted when Lewis made a grand entrance - while wearing a Chewbacca mask.

He was poking more fun at Oasis star Noel Gallagher, who recently launched another bitter rant about Lewis, likening him to the hairy Star Wars character and branding Scotland a “third world country”.

The TRNSMT gig came just two weeks after Lewis made a dream debut at Glastonbury, one of the world’s biggest music festivals.
