Lewes crash: New Year's Eve diners hurt after car ploughs into Indian restaurant

A horror New Year's Eve smash has seen a car plough through an Indian restaurant, injuring diners and sending others fleeing in terror.

Images show the devastation wrought to the Chaula restaurant in Lewes, East Sussex, after the car smashed into the front of it tonight.

Sussex Police told the Sun that three people have suffered minor injuries.

Twitter account @SussexIncidents said that the car has been recovered and emergency services have left the scene.

@Biggafferglen tweeted: "So much for a quiet night out in Lewes .....luckily no one seriously hurt cuts and bruises.....hope they catch the p***k who just drove off in a silver discovery."

A video of the scene shows broken glass in the restaurant, with paramedics treating patients at a table inside.

Pictures by @SussexIncidents show the front of the restaurant has been boarded up.

It comes hours after a 62-year-old woman died after a hit-and-run driver crashed into her mobility scooter on New Year's Eve.

The victim died at the scene of the collision at a junction in Cannock, Staffordshire, at around 6.30pm.

A search has been launched for the driver, who did not stop.

Staffordshire Police said in a statement: "Despite the best efforts of emergency service staff, she sadly died at the scene.

"Her family have been informed and will be offered support from specially-trained officers.

"The driver of the car failed to stop and enquiries are on-going to trace them."
