1. Lewandowski out

In a sudden twist, Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, one of the most controversial figures of the election cycle outside Trump himself, was ousted on Monday with no immediate explanation.

Summary

Corey Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign. The campaign is grateful to Corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future.

2. Trump in trouble

Trump has been slipping in the polls for weeks, has encountered sharp criticism for remarks about a federal judge and the mass shooting in Orlando, and has shown only feeble fundraising and organizing efforts.

3. Ivanka Trump said to play role

Lewandowski himself told reporters he did not know why he had been fired, but multiple Trump insiders blamed friction between him and the wider Trump family, especially daughter Ivanka.

Summary

In media rounds on Monday, Lewandowski was the loyal soldier. The campaign is going great, he said, and Trump is great: “He’s probably the best speaker we’ve ever had as a presidential candidate in the country’s history.”

Summary

Ivanka is a great asset to the campaign. I don’t think that’s the case. I think Ivanka is somebody who understands her father and is a fantastic surrogate. She has a way about her ... so polished, so professional.

Summary

Lewandowski, who met Trump in 2014, attracted the wrong kind of attention in March when Florida prosecutors investigated him for manhandling a reporter, but did not bring charges.
