Levi Colwill joins England squad as Gareth Southgate assesses Chelsea defender

Levi Colwill has trained with Gareth Southgate’s England senior squad ahead of Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

The 20-year-old has been promoted from the Under-21s squad, which is preparing for next week’s European Championship, but remains available to coach Lee Carsley.

Colwill is not expected to be handed a senior debut but the opportunity allows Gareth Southgate to assess the Chelsea defender after a breakthrough season on loan at Brighton.

The Three Lions boss is without a number of players including Brighton’s Lewis Dunk and Real Madrid-bound Jude Bellingham plus West Ham and Manchester City’s European champions, so there is space for Colwill to stand out.

City’s Champions League winners have been given a holiday following their historic treble, while Declan Rice is also having a break after captaining West Ham to Europa Conference League glory.

Should Colwill travel to Malta with the senior squad on June 16 and remain with the team for the visit of North Macedonia to Old Trafford three days later, which is not currently the plan, he would still be available for the Young Lions’ Euros opener against Czech Republic in George on June 22.

A further update on Colwill’s role with the senior squad is expected this week.

Colwill, meanwhile, has been subject of a £30million bid from Brighton but Chelsea are adamant that he is not for sale.

The youngster is currently expected to join up with Mauricio Pochettino's squad in pre-season.
