Levenshulme Market has made it to the final three for a prestigious BBC award

Levenshulme Market has been announced as a finalist in the BBC Food and Farming Awards - with all three finalists hailing from the north west.

Levy Market is nominated alongside A Small Good Thing (a Bolton-based community greengrocer) and Squash Liverpool (an arts and health initiative) in the category of Best Shop or Market.

The awards recognise businesses and projects that 'promote the cause of good food', with thousands of entrants applying from across the UK.

All three finalists will now be visited in the coming weeks by the awards' judges Leyla Kazim - a food and travel photographer and writer - and Mark Diacono - a food writer, grower and photographer.

The winner of the award will be announced at a ceremony in Bristol on June 12.

Levy Market takes place in the train station car park in the south Manchester suburb every weekend between March and December.

It's also behind a pop-up lunchtime food market at the University of Manchester, which takes place every Tuesday during term time.

The community-run market was set up in 2013 at a Community Interest Company, and is one of only a handful of social enterprise markets in the UK.

The judges will visit and meet stall-holders, who range from global street food vendors to those selling fresh organic produce or handmade cakes, preserves, small batch spirits and oils.

The market also has a bar serving craft beers, ales, wines and cocktails at every weekend market.

There are 11 categories in the awards, ranging from best street food to farming hero.

Leeds-based Northern Monk Brew Co, which has a Refectory bar in the Northern Quarter, is nominated for best drinks producer.

Market manager Christine Felton says: "We’re so, so thrilled to have made it to the final three, and we love that all finalists in this category are from the North West and have a community or social focus.

"Street food and produce has always been a huge part of what we do, bringing the community together each weekend over great food! And we're proud to have so many exceptional chefs, makers and producers on our stalls each week.

"We’d also like to say a huge thank you to our customers, as it was their nominations that got us to this point. We’ve had so much community support, so whatever happens we’re absolutely delighted."
