Level Five latest: Government discussing fines for breaching of 5km rule and new ban on evictions

The Cabinet is set to discuss introducing fines for those who breach the 5km travel limit.

Under the Level Five lockdown announced last night, which comes into force from midnight on Wednesday, people can only exercise within the short distance of their home.

They are also allowed meet up with someone from one other household within the same limit, providing such a meeting is outside and social distancing is maintained.

And the Government will possibly introduce new fines for rule the breaking of these rules, unless it's for essential reasons.

Bringing back a ban on evictions for the next six weeks is also on the agenda for Cabinet.

It is understood that Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien will bring a proposal to other Ministers this afternoon.

The memo will likely need legislation, but would be swiftly passed through the Oireachtas next week, RTE reports.

The new restrictions, the highest which are currently possible, mean that pubs, restaurants, cafes and all non-essential retail outlets will have to close.

Tens of thousands will be out of work, with the Government restoring changes made to the Pandemic Unemployment Payment and the Wage Subsidy Scheme as a result.

The second lockdown, which will see a return to the 5km travel limit, will be in force until December 1.

The Taoiseach delivered a State of the Nation address last night where he outlined the Government’s reasoning for our second national shutdown.

He called on people to knuckle-down once more, saying: “As Taoiseach, I’m asking everyone again to take this threat seriously.”

And then the country’s leader pointed out that not everybody had obeyed the rules up to now, adding: “The Government cannot stop it (Covid) on its own.

“Many people have done everything that has been asked of them, but some have not.”
