The White Sox injury woes took another bad turn Saturday when Leury Garcia was transferred to the 45-day injured list and right-hander Ian Hamilton went on the 10-day IL.
Garcia, who plays all three outfield positions and three infield spots, has a ligament tear in his left thumb that will require surgery, manager Rick Renteria said.
“It’s a big loss for us,” Renteria said, “because he was so flexible and capable of doing so much.”
García, 29, went on the 10-day injured Tuesday, a day after he injured the thumb making a head first slide into first base. He is hitting .271 with three home runs and eight RBI over 16 games. He will be out until October at the earliest.
Infielder Cheslor Cuthbert’s contract was purchased from Schaumburg. Danny Mendick, who has been filling in with good results for injured second baseman Nick Madrigal, can play shortstop and third base and has some outfield experience.
Hamilton (retroactive to August 12) is on the 10-day IL with right shoulder soreness. He had a 4.50 ERA over four innings and four appearances.
The Sox also recalled left-hander Bernardo Flores from Schaumburg to serve as the 29th man for Saturday’s doubleheader against the Cardinals. Flores, who has no major league experience, has a 3.18 ERA over 432 2⁄3 innings with 342 strikeouts in 82 games (79 starts) over four seasons in the Sox minor-league system. The Sox picked him in seventh round of the 2016 draft out of USC.
Also from Renteria’s pregame Zoom call Saturday:
Madrigal (shoulder separation) was with team during its workout day Friday and did some throwing but no batting practice. “But he’ll back at Schaumburg continuing to work through what he has to go through. He’s throwing, he’s catching, he’s taking groundballs.”
*Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) threw what was said to be a two-inning simulation Friday and will throw again Monday, Renteria said. “We’ll see how that continues to proceed. ...He threw well yesterday. All indications are he had a nice day.”
*Aaron Bummer (biceps soreness) continues to get treatment and won’t be rushed back. “He’s one of those guys I know that we as an organization don’t want to rush but we’d like to have him back as soon as possible. They’re going to continue to monitor him and make sure he progresses in a positive direction.”
*Carlos Rodon (sore shoulder) played catch, extending it to 120 feet Saturday.
