CHICAGO _ Leury Garcia took two strikes to begin his seventh-inning at-bat against Yankees reliever Adam Ottavino.
The White Sox center fielder eventually worked the count full.
And on the 11th pitch of the epic at-bat, Garcia connected for a solo home run. It served as the difference as the Sox defeated the Yankees 5-4 in front of 25,311 fans Thursday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Garcia had two hits and two RBIs in the opener of the four-game series.
The White Sox rallied from a 4-0 deficit. Garcia knocked in Yolmer Sanchez with a double in the fifth for the team's first run.
The hit placed runners on second and third. Tim Anderson followed with a three-run homer to center field to tie the game at 4. It was the shortstop's 10th homer of the season.
Garcia broke the tie two innings later with his fourth homer of the season.
Sox starter Ivan Nova allowed four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings against one of his former teams. Nova struck out five and walked two.
Nova spent seven seasons with the Yankees before being traded to the Pirates on Aug. 1, 2016. He went 53-39 with a 4.41 ERA in 131 games (118 starts) with the Yankees.
It was his second outing this season against the Yankees. The first came on April 13 in New York, when he allowed one earned run and four hits in a six-inning no decision.
He received the no-decision again Thursday.
Sox reliever Evan Marshall struck out two in a scoreless seventh to gain the win. He has pitched 16 1/3 innings this season without allowing an earned run.
Kelvin Herrera worked around a two-out single by Didi Gregorius and struck out Gleyber Torres to get out of the eighth. Herrera struck out three in the inning.
Closer Alex Colome was unavailable after pitching 1 2/3 innings Tuesday for a save against the Nationals. The Sox turned to Aaron Bummer on Thursday. Bummer allowed a one-out single, but struck out the final two batters for his first career save.
