Hugh Closs writes: As well as his fine jazz recordings, Orrin Keepnews also produced, with Bill Grauer, the landmark Pictorial History of Jazz: People and Places from New Orleans to Modern Jazz, with almost 300 pages of photographs chronicling the story of musicians from Buddy Bolden to Ornette Coleman. Published in Britain in 1960, it soon became the bible of young enthusiasts. I still refer to it. And so, I suspect, do many other jazz-lovers of a certain age.
