Letters sent out to homes over Santa Dash road closures

Thousands of jolly Santa Clauses will paint the city red next month as they race along Liverpool's famous waterfront.

Between 6,000 and 8,000 people are expected to make a mad dash from the Pier Head to the Town Hall on Sunday, December 4 - all while dressed in bright red suits and full white beards.

An important notice from BTR Liverpool has been sent to residents ahead of the annual Liverpool Santa Dash, warning them of road closures during the 5K fun run, which raises money for Alder Hey Children’s Charity.

The letters set out the plans for the day, with some residents being warned they will be unable to take their cars out of their homes until the charity event passes by.

The run will begin at 9.30am, with runners leaving Canada Boulevard via Brunswock street to access the main waterfront roads, which will close from 9.25am until 10am.

A traffic management plan involving road closures and lane restrictions will be in force from 6am, affecting Salthouse Quay, Gower Street, Wapping, Strand Street, James Street, Lord STreet, North John Street, Victoria Street, Stanley Street, Dale Street, Vauxhall Road, Leeds Street, Old Hall Street, Union Street, Rumford Place, Tithebarn Street, Moorfields and Dale Street.

Traffic on George's Dockway will be managed from 6am, with a full road closure being put in place at 8.55am for about 20 minutes as runners exit Canada Boulevard onto The Strand.

It will not be possible for drivers to exit Westmorland Drive, Cockspur Street, Princes Gardens, Prussia Street, Highfield Street and Pall Mall between 9am and 10.30am as runners pass by. Afterwards, residents will be able to leave the area using Cheapside and St Thomas Street.

It is expected that the Santas will have cleared Vauxhall Road and Leeds Street by 11am, after which time the roads will be returned to normal.

There will be restricted traffic movement to and from Old Leeds Street, East Street, Bixteth Street, Rigby Street, Virginia Street, Prussia Street, Ormond Street, George Street, Union Street, Rumford Place and Old Hall Street until approximately 11am.

All road closures are expected to be lifted by 12pm.

Standard entry to the Liverpool Santa Dash costs £25, or £17 for the shorter 'mini dash' for children under 12. Sign up online here.
