The book Impro by Keith Johnstone made a great impression on me as a history teacher in a Hull comprehensive school in the 1980s. The opening chapter was the best description of fostering creative expression in children that I had ever read. His recognition that education could be a magical, transforming experience was revelatory.
It encouraged me to stop merely dabbling in school plays and retrain as a drama teacher, drawing on his ideas for the rest of my career. Thank you, Keith.

In 1969 Keith Johnstone and his improvisation group Theatre Machine performed once a week for a keen and diverse audience at Pentameters pub fringe theatre, Hampstead, north London. We’re still inspired by his ideas.
