Letters: 'I would like to know where in Nottingham is safe for pedestrians to walk'

New e-bikes have launched across Nottingham. A fleet of up to 700 shared electric bikes are available across the city on a pay-as-you basis.

The scheme is a partnership between Nottingham City Council and e-bike providers Lime, which runs the same scheme in London, Milton Keynes and Salford. Riders will need to use the Lime app and will be required to park and collect e-bikes at one of about 100 designated parking bays around the city.

Users are charged 19p per minute, along with an initial £1 payment. This works out at £12.40 for a one-hour hire.

People have been quick to share their views on the new e-bikes with some questioning why the bikes did not come with helmets. Others have raised concerns about the number of bikes being dumped around the city.

Does anyone but the council back e-bikes?

I suppose the council thought electric bikes were a good idea. I don’t think so.

I have just walked past two – one was burnt out at the bottom of Swains Avenue and the other one dumped in the middle of the pavement a few feet away. I thought they were supposed to be left in a designated area?

I think pedestrians have enough to cope with – yellow scooters dumped anywhere, bikes are ridden on the pavements even where there is a cycle track, and another cycle track being put on Carlton Road that’s a waste of money. Then there are the illegal scooters whizzing around on the pavements.

I have had several near misses with them – you cannot hear them coming. I read that 13 people have been killed in the UK with these illegal scooters, one in Notts ridden illegally by a 14-year-old without a licence.

You cannot get a licence until you are 16 years old. I would like to know where is a safe place for pedestrians to walk.
