In the third of John Hopkins’s quartet of TV plays Talking to a Stranger (BBC 2, 1966), Windsor Davies gave a quiet, sensitive performance of a detective sergeant investigating a suicide. It could not have been further removed from the role of Sergeant Major “Shut-up!” Williams and showed the range and skill of a very professional actor.
