When I interviewed Tim Robinson at his home in Roundstone, County Galway, in 2002, he recalled his first literary experience. This was a children’s work, A Squirrel Called Rufus (1941) by Richard Church, which he described as “a pantheistic paean to the beauty of wildlife in the forest”. It had a deep influence on him.
