Sir Peter Newsam not only attended meetings about closing grammar schools: he also encouraged the conversion of grammars to comprehensives. He often told me that once parents of grammar school pupils were reassured that the school would stay open, with their children remaining and the comprehensive intake starting from the bottom up, opposition to change went away.
