It was always a puzzle that Sir Fred Catherwood became a Conservative MEP. When his influential book, The Christian in Industrial Society, with its advocacy of co-partnership, was published in 1964, one evangelical reviewer wrote that “political Liberals will find their next manifesto here”. He was also a supporter of the single transferable vote and was a long serving vice-president of the Electoral Reform Society.
