In 1979 I interviewed Ray Fitzwalter for Whistle Blowers, a series on TV investigative journalism for BBC1. He was quietly thrilled and amazed that we gave far more credit to him and his World in Action series as the leaders in the field than to any BBC output. From then on he followed my career in an encouraging way, sending a supportive letter at a particular low point. I was always struck by the soft-spoken gentleness that lay alongside his steely resolve when exposing corruption and criminality, and his great integrity.
