I met Paul Daniels about five years ago when he was appearing in Hamlet – The Comedy! produced by Oddsocks, the wonderfully eccentric touring theatre company. Paul performed his role as the ghost of Hamlet’s father in the form of a hologram. He and his wife, Debbie, came to the show at Jackson’s Lane, a north London community arts centre. I was a volunteer, selling programmes and souvenirs. Paul bought generous quantities of everything, but the highlight was his demonstration of how to fold a T-shirt to perfection. We asked him to repeat the performance over and over again but none of us understood what he was doing or managed to copy him. He and Debbie were great fun and made the whole evening joyous and memorable.
