At Historic Royal Palaces we relied heavily on the great calming influence and ability of the listed buildings expert Paul Barker to address complex situations through to the end.
He was one of the dedicated team who, having helped to transform Kensington Palace’s visitor facilities from 2010 to 2012, worked equally hard to prepare for the Queen’s visit to reopen the palace to the public in her jubilee year. On the night before the reopening, after sunset, I remember seeing Paul, in his suit, leading from the front by sweeping the drive.
