Joel McIver’s obituary of the American singer and songwriter Maurice White mentions his early work as a session drummer for Chess Records on tracks such as Rescue Me by Fontella Bass. However, perhaps his most remarkable performance during this period was his thunderous drumming on Billy Stewart’s jaw-dropping deconstruction of George Gershwin’s song Summertime, which helped make the track such an astonishing tour de force.
