When I worked at the National Association of Youth Clubs (now UK Youth), Peter Melchett was chair of Community Industry, finding jobs for young people.
Developing a positive approach focused on girls and young women was contentious among many men and boys in the 1980s. Realising the extent of the backlash that I and other feminist youth workers were having to deal with, Peter invited me to chair a review of Community Industry’s work with girls and young women – supporting them without promoting himself.
