Rosalie Wilkins and I grew up at the same time in Chesham Bois, Buckinghamshire. I remember the enormous shock to the community when we heard that she had had an accident and been paralysed from the shoulders down.
I met her in nearby Amersham in the early 1970s, as she was struggling to get her wheelchair into an adapted Mini. I sprang into action and offered to help. “No, thanks!” she said. “What would I do, if you weren’t here?”
I was rather shocked but soon realised that she was right.
