From her Buddhist standpoint, Joanna Macy took a long view of nuclear disarmament and the legacy of radioactive materials resulting from nuclear power and nuclear weapons.

While most experts on the subject consider deep burial – “out of sight, out of mind” – to be the best solution, Macy believed the opposite approach was necessary, that is to say keeping the waste visible and actively monitored across generations.
