The redoubtable Dundee United manager Jim McLean, who took the club to success in European football, was once memorably described as a joiner from Larkhall who thought he was a carpenter from Nazareth. He did, of course, perform miracles at the club, but if Jesus ever punched a journalist for asking an unwelcome question, that was tactfully omitted from the gospels.
