My husband, Bill Cove, now 94, served as a Westminster councillor for Alderney ward, Pimlico, with Gery Bramall. He was reluctant to stand as we had just moved house, but Gery said: “Don’t worry Bill, it’s a Tory ward, we won’t win.”
It was 1962, a Labour landslide, with its councillors in Westminster increasing from three to 17.
