The historian and curator Frances Harris was a generous host to students on the garden history course at Birkbeck, University of London at the British Library. She showed us the plan of John Evelyn’s Sayes Court house and garden in Deptford, south-east London, in the 17th century, and household recipe books kept by his wife.
Plants from the garden were prepared in Evelyn’s own still, and made into medicines.
