As a drama student at Bristol University I took part in a production of Seconds at the Fight for Madrid by David Pownall. The play was an account of the volunteers’ resistance to Franco’s forces in the defence of the capital. Intensely loyal, David was supportive of his actors, including me as Serge, a seemingly mad Russian who had joined the volunteers, just as he was of their cause.
