Richard Jameson writes: As a civil servant in the Department of Education I knew Christopher Price when he was parliamentary private secretary to Tony Crosland (1966-67) and later to Fred Mulley (1975-76). He was a man of humour and something of a bon vivant. To a party he gave for Labour MPs who had served on the committee stage of an education bill in the latter period, he invited a couple of civil servants who had been involved and a single Tory MP, Keith Hampson. When I asked Price about this, he said: “Only a Tory knows how to open champagne.”
