The obituary by Roger Protz of the brilliant, inventive cartoonist and broadcaster Bill Tidy, recalled memories of meeting Bill at his home in Kegworth. We spent lunchtime at his favourite local, the Cap & Stocking, conveniently within walking distance of his house in the village. The pub’s setting was a throwback to another age and therefore a fitting venue in which to spend time with Bill.
I was then a television documentary director and had visited Bill to talk about a potential project. Amid the business talk, I got to know more about his career and his creations, including The Fosdyke Saga and The Cloggies, and of course about Bill’s passion for cricket. I came away with many ideas for the programme but also with the feeling of having been in the company of a truly outstanding man.
