William Davis may not have been a comic, but he had a stimulating sense of fun. When I worked for him on the Evening Standard City desk, one of our colleagues proudly wore the little pin revealing his membership of Mensa.

Bill, thinking this outrageously pompous, had his secretary pop out to the local WH Smith, and the next morning we were all smugly wearing identical proof of our mental brilliance.
