Letter: Bartering with Peter Cropper and the Lindsay Quartet

Peter Cropper
Peter Cropper's performances made an indelible impression

When keeping a restaurant, the Carved Angel, in Dartmouth, south Devon, during the 1970s, we were fortunate in having as customers many of the organisers and performers from the summer music school at Dartington Hall not many miles away.

We boldly suggested that in return for a slap-up meal, Peter Cropper and the Lindsay Quartet might give us a short concert, a proposal they accepted with grace and hungry enthusiasm over three successive years. Each performance left, I think, an indelible impression on those lucky enough to hear their sweet harmonies fill the room. The subsequent jollities were memorable too.
